Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown part of the component JPEG Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The JPEG decoder in Microsoft Internet Explorer allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption or crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via certain crafted JPEG images, as demonstrated using (1) mov_fencepost.jpg, (2) cmp_fencepost.jpg, (3) oom_dos.jpg, or (4) random.jpg.
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was presented 07/19/2005 by Michal Zalewski as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2308 since 07/19/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1580 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21701), SecurityFocus (BID 14286†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-14350†). See VDB-1693 for similar entry. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
