Details
A vulnerability was found in Oracle Forms up to 10g. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation of the argument pathname with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Oracle Forms 4.5 through 10g starts form executables from arbitrary directories and executes them as the Oracle or System user, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code by uploading a malicious .fmx file and referencing it using an absolute pathname argument in the (1) form or (2) module parameters to f90servlet.
The weakness was presented 07/26/2005 by Alexander Kornbrust with Red-Database-Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at red-database-security.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2372. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9115.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21435), SecurityFocus (BID 14319†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29214†). See VDB-1638 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
