Softing uaToolkit Embedded up to 1.41.0 Publish Response MaxNotificationPerPublish memory allocation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Softing uaToolkit Embedded up to 1.41.0 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Publish Response Handler. The manipulation of the argument MaxNotificationPerPublish with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

An issue was discovered in Softing uaToolkit Embedded before 1.41.1. When a subscription with a very low MaxNotificationPerPublish parameter is created, a publish response is mishandled, leading to memory consumption. When that happens often enough, the device will be out of memory, i.e., a denial of service.

The advisory is available at industrial.softing.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-25075 since 02/04/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 1.41.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
