Linux Kernel up to 6.7.5 nilfs2 nilfs_recovery_copy_block uninitialized pointer

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.5. Affected is the function nilfs_recovery_copy_block of the component nilfs2. The manipulation results in uninitialized pointer. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-26697. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.5. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function nilfs_recovery_copy_block of the component nilfs2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a uninitialized pointer vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-824. The product accesses or uses a pointer that has not been initialized. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nilfs2: fix data corruption in dsync block recovery for small block sizes The helper function nilfs_recovery_copy_block() of nilfs_recovery_dsync_blocks(), which recovers data from logs created by data sync writes during a mount after an unclean shutdown, incorrectly calculates the on-page offset when copying repair data to the file's page cache. In environments where the block size is smaller than the page size, this flaw can cause data corruption and leak uninitialized memory bytes during the recovery process. Fix these issues by correcting this byte offset calculation on the page.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-26697 since 02/19/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239850 (TencentOS Server 4: kernel (TSSA-2024:0980)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.307, 5.4.269, 5.10.210, 5.15.149, 6.1.79, 6.6.18, 6.7.6 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5278c3eb6bf5/a6efe6dbaaf5/364a66be2abd/120f7fa2008e/9c9c68d64fd3/2e1480538ef6/2000016bab49/67b8bcbaed47 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (239850) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-0773). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
