Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6 afs_update_volume_status buffer overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6. This affects the function afs_update_volume_status. Performing a manipulation results in buffer overflow. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2024-26736. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6. This affects the function afs_update_volume_status. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: afs: Increase buffer size in afs_update_volume_status() The max length of volume->vid value is 20 characters. So increase idbuf[] size up to 24 to avoid overflow. Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE. [DH: Actually, it's 20 + NUL, so increase it to 24 and use snprintf()]

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-26736 since 02/19/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239850 (TencentOS Server 4: kernel (TSSA-2024:0980)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.270, 5.10.211, 5.15.150, 6.1.80, 6.6.19, 6.7.7 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 5c27d85a69fa/d9b5e2b7a819/e56662160fc2/e8530b170e46/6e6065dd25b6/d34a5e57632b/6ea38e2aeb72 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (239850) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-0773). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
