Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.6. This issue affects the function drv_tx of the component mac80211. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: wifi: mac80211: fix race condition on enabling fast-xmit fast-xmit must only be enabled after the sta has been uploaded to the driver, otherwise it could end up passing the not-yet-uploaded sta via drv_tx calls to the driver, leading to potential crashes because of uninitialized drv_priv data. Add a missing sta->uploaded check and re-check fast xmit after inserting a sta.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-26779 since 02/19/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234658 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2025:3935)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.308, 5.4.270, 5.10.211, 5.15.150, 6.1.80, 6.6.19, 6.7.7 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 76fad1174a0c/85720b69aef1/5ffab99e070b/88c18fd06608/eb39bb548bf9/54b79d878696/281280276b70/bcbc84af1183 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
