Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.20/6.7.8. This vulnerability affects the function dev_get_drvdata of the component cadence-qspi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: cadence-qspi: fix pointer reference in runtime PM hooks dev_get_drvdata() gets used to acquire the pointer to cqspi and the SPI controller. Neither embed the other; this lead to memory corruption. On a given platform (Mobileye EyeQ5) the memory corruption is hidden inside cqspi->f_pdata. Also, this uninitialised memory is used as a mutex (ctlr->bus_lock_mutex) by spi_controller_suspend().
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2024-26807 since 02/19/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 227870 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-26807), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 6.6.21, 6.7.9 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 03f1573c9587/34e1d5c4407c/32ce3bb57b6b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (227870) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-0773). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
