Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6 (Operating System). This affects the function restore_sigcontext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Linux kernel 2.6 and 2.4 on the IA64 architecture allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel crash) via ptrace and the restore_sigcontext function.
The bug was discovered 06/23/2005. The weakness was released 08/05/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared at novell.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-1761 since 05/31/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 43 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 21943 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2005:514)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117852 (CentOS Security Update for Kernel (CESA-2005:663)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
