The AIM/ICQ module in Gaim before 1.5.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a filename that contains invalid UTF-8 characters.
The bug was discovered 08/10/2005. The weakness was disclosed 08/16/2005 by Daniel Atallah (Website). The advisory is shared at ubuntulinux.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-2102 since 06/30/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117868 (CentOS Security Update for Gaim (CESA-2005:627)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9079.
