Summary
A vulnerability has been found in MySQL and classified as problematic. This affects the function init_syms of the component MySQL. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2005-2558. There is not any exploit available.
The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in MySQL (Database Software). This affects the function init_syms of the component MySQL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the init_syms function in MySQL 4.0 before 4.0.25, 4.1 before 4.1.13, and 5.0 before 5.0.7-beta allows remote authenticated users who can create user-defined functions to execute arbitrary code via a long function_name field.
The bug was discovered 08/08/2005. The weakness was released 08/16/2005 with Application Security Inc. (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2558 since 08/16/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19416 (MySQL < 4.0.25 / 4.1.13 / 5.0.7 Multiple Vulnerabilies), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19143 (MySQL User-Defined Function Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 4.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9150.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21737), Tenable (19416), SecurityFocus (BID 14509†), OSVDB (18896†) and Secunia (SA17027†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-26016. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
