Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003/XP (Operating System). This affects an unknown code of the component IPv6 Stack. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Windows Server 2003 and XP SP2, with Windows Firewall turned off, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (CPU consumption) via a TCP packet with the SYN flag set and the same destination and source address and port, aka a reoccurrence of the "Land" vulnerability (CVE-1999-0016).
The bug was discovered 02/25/2005. The weakness was released 10/10/2006 by Dejan Levaja with Microsoft as MS06-064 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-0688 since 03/09/2005. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 8 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 18028 (MS05-019: Vulnerabilities in TCP/IP Could Allow Remote Code Execution (893066) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90244 (Windows TCP/IP Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (MS05-019)).
Applying the patch MS06-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8363.
