Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4 mlx5e resync_handle_seq_match denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4. This vulnerability affects the function resync_handle_seq_match of the component mlx5e. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/mlx5e: kTLS, Fix crash in RX resync flow For the TLS RX resync flow, we maintain a list of TLS contexts that require some attention, to communicate their resync information to the HW. Here we fix list corruptions, by protecting the entries against movements coming from resync_handle_seq_match(), until their resync handling in napi is fully completed.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-47215. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 5.15.5 or 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ebeda7a9528a/cc4a9cc03faa is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
