Summary
A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4. This affects the function mutex_unlock of the component spi. The manipulation results in use after free.
This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-47195. There is no available exploit.
Upgrading the affected component is recommended.
Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4. Affected is the function mutex_unlock of the component spi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: fix use-after-free of the add_lock mutex Commit 6098475d4cb4 ("spi: Fix deadlock when adding SPI controllers on SPI buses") introduced a per-controller mutex. But mutex_unlock() of said lock is called after the controller is already freed: spi_unregister_controller(ctlr) -> put_device(&ctlr->dev) -> spi_controller_release(dev) -> mutex_unlock(&ctrl->add_lock) Move the put_device() after the mutex_unlock().
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2021-47195 since 03/25/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 11/17/2024).
Upgrading to version 5.15.5 or 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 37330f37f666/6c53b45c71b4 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
