Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4 scsi lpfc_unreg_rpi use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4. This issue affects the function lpfc_unreg_rpi of the component scsi. Such manipulation leads to use after free. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2021-47198. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.4 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function lpfc_unreg_rpi of the component scsi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: lpfc: Fix use-after-free in lpfc_unreg_rpi() routine An error is detected with the following report when unloading the driver: "KASAN: use-after-free in lpfc_unreg_rpi+0x1b1b" The NLP_REG_LOGIN_SEND nlp_flag is set in lpfc_reg_fab_ctrl_node(), but the flag is not cleared upon completion of the login. This allows a second call to lpfc_unreg_rpi() to proceed with nlp_rpi set to LPFC_RPI_ALLOW_ERROR. This results in a use after free access when used as an rpi_ids array index. Fix by clearing the NLP_REG_LOGIN_SEND nlp_flag in lpfc_mbx_cmpl_fc_reg_login().

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2021-47198 since 03/25/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/11/2025).

Upgrading to version 5.15.5 or 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch dbebf865b323/79b20beccea3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
