zenml-io ZenML up to 0.55.4 Endpoint /api/v1/steps path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in zenml-io ZenML up to 0.55.4. This affects an unknown part of the file /api/v1/steps of the component Endpoint. The manipulation results in path traversal. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2024-2083. The attack can be executed remotely. There is not any exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in zenml-io ZenML up to 0.55.4. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file /api/v1/steps of the component Endpoint. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-29. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A directory traversal vulnerability exists in the zenml-io/zenml repository, specifically within the /api/v1/steps endpoint. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability by manipulating the 'logs' URI path in the request to fetch arbitrary file content, bypassing intended access restrictions. The vulnerability arises due to the lack of validation for directory traversal patterns, allowing attackers to access files outside of the restricted directory.

The advisory is shared for download at huntr.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-2083 since 03/01/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

Upgrading to version 0.55.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 00e934f33a243a554f5f65b80eefd5ea5117367b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at EUVD (EUVD-2024-1126). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
