A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apache HTTP Server up to 1.0.1 (Web Server). Affected by this vulnerability is the function set_var. Format string vulnerability in the mod_tcl module 1.0 for Apache 2.x allows context-dependent attackers to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers that are not properly handled in a set_var function call in (1) tcl_cmds.c and (2) tcl_core.c.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2006. The weakness was released 10/16/2006 by Sparfell with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2006-4154 since 08/16/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 61 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22915 (GLSA-200610-12 : Apache mod_tcl: Format string vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 105728 (EOL/Obsolete Software: Apache HTTP Server 2.2.x).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at tcl.apache.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16021. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8969.
