Linux Kernel up to 6.7.9 Netfilter nf_conntrack_h323 out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.9. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function nf_conntrack_h323 of the component Netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_conntrack_h323: Add protection for bmp length out of range UBSAN load reports an exception of BRK#5515 SHIFT_ISSUE:Bitwise shifts that are out of bounds for their data type. vmlinux get_bitmap(b=75) + 712 vmlinux decode_seq(bs=0xFFFFFFD008037000, f=0xFFFFFFD008037018, level=134443100) + 1956 vmlinux decode_choice(base=0xFFFFFFD0080370F0, level=23843636) + 1216 vmlinux decode_seq(f=0xFFFFFFD0080371A8, level=134443500) + 812 vmlinux decode_choice(base=0xFFFFFFD008037280, level=0) + 1216 vmlinux DecodeRasMessage() + 304 vmlinux ras_help() + 684 vmlinux nf_confirm() + 188 Due to abnormal data in skb->data, the extension bitmap length exceeds 32 when decoding ras message then uses the length to make a shift operation. It will change into negative after several loop. UBSAN load could detect a negative shift as an undefined behaviour and reports exception. So we add the protection to avoid the length exceeding 32. Or else it will return out of range error and stop decoding.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-26851 since 02/19/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207818 (ubuntu_linux USN-7039-1: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / Ubuntu 16.04 LTS : Linux kernel vulnerabilities (USN-7039-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.310, 5.4.272, 5.10.213, 5.15.152, 6.1.82, 6.6.22, 6.7.10 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability.
