The affected component should be upgraded.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function roundup_pow_of_two of the component bpf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix hashtab overflow check on 32-bit arches The hashtab code relies on roundup_pow_of_two() to compute the number of hash buckets, and contains an overflow check by checking if the resulting value is 0. However, on 32-bit arches, the roundup code itself can overflow by doing a 32-bit left-shift of an unsigned long value, which is undefined behaviour, so it is not guaranteed to truncate neatly. This was triggered by syzbot on the DEVMAP_HASH type, which contains the same check, copied from the hashtab code. So apply the same fix to hashtab, by moving the overflow check to before the roundup.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-26884 since 02/19/2024. The exploitability is told to be easy. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239742 (TencentOS Server 2: kernel (TSSA-2024:1030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.311, 5.4.273, 5.10.214, 5.15.153, 6.1.83, 6.6.23, 6.7.11, 6.8.2 or 6.9-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 33ec04cadb77/92c81fbb3ed2/64f00b4df059/3b08cfc65f07/a83fdaeaea36/8435f0961bf3/d817f0d34d92/a6fa75b5096c/6787d916c2cf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
