Linux Kernel up to 6.7.5 Netfilter synchronize_rcu race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.5. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function synchronize_rcu of the component Netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: ipset: fix performance regression in swap operation The patch "netfilter: ipset: fix race condition between swap/destroy and kernel side add/del/test", commit 28628fa9 fixes a race condition. But the synchronize_rcu() added to the swap function unnecessarily slows it down: it can safely be moved to destroy and use call_rcu() instead. Eric Dumazet pointed out that simply calling the destroy functions as rcu callback does not work: sets with timeout use garbage collectors which need cancelling at destroy which can wait. Therefore the destroy functions are split into two: cancelling garbage collectors safely at executing the command received by netlink and moving the remaining part only into the rcu callback.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-26910 since 02/19/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.4.269, 5.10.210, 5.15.149, 6.1.79, 6.6.18, 6.7, 6.7.6 or 6.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch c7f2733e5011/a24d5f2ac8ef/c2dc077d8f72/653bc5e6d999/b93a6756a01f/970709a67696/97f7cf1cd80e is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (209785). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
