Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in cvs 1.12.12. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component cvsbug. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
cvsbug in CVS 1.12.12 and earlier creates temporary files insecurely, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files and execute arbitrary code via a symlink attack.
The bug was discovered 08/24/2005. The weakness was released 08/26/2005 by Josh Bressers as Bug 166366 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2005-2693 since 08/25/2005. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19609 (Debian DSA-802-1 : cvs - insecure temporary files), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117832 (CentOS Security Update for CVS (CESA-2005:756)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (21983), Tenable (19609), SecurityFocus (BID 14648†), OSVDB (18949†) and Secunia (SA16765†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
