Linux Kernel up to 6.6.22/6.7.10/6.8.1 SUNRPC gss_import_v2_context memory leak

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.22/6.7.10/6.8.1. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function gss_import_v2_context of the component SUNRPC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: SUNRPC: fix a memleak in gss_import_v2_context The ctx->mech_used.data allocated by kmemdup is not freed in neither gss_import_v2_context nor it only caller gss_krb5_import_sec_context, which frees ctx on error. Thus, this patch reform the last call of gss_import_v2_context to the gss_krb5_import_ctx_v2, preventing the memleak while keepping the return formation.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-52653 since 03/06/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.23, 6.7.11, 6.8.2 or 6.9-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 99044c01ed53/47ac11db93e7/d111e30d9cd8/e67b652d8e85 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209785) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1008). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
