Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function v4l2_m2m_register_entity of the component v4l2-mem2mem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: v4l2-mem2mem: fix a memleak in v4l2_m2m_register_entity The entity->name (i.e. name) is allocated in v4l2_m2m_register_entity but isn't freed in its following error-handling paths. This patch adds such deallocation to prevent memleak of entity->name.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-27077 since 02/19/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 4.19.311, 5.4.273, 5.10.214, 5.15.153, 6.1.83, 6.6.23, 6.7.11, 6.8.2 or 6.9-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3dd8abb0ed0e/0175f2d34c85/afd2a82fe300/dc866b69cc51/0c9550b032de/90029b9c979b/5dc319cc3c4f/9c23ef30e840/8f94b49a5b5d is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1008). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
