Linux Kernel up to 6.8.1 hi3559a devm_kfree iteration

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation leads to iteration. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2024-27039. No exploit exists. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.152/6.1.82/6.6.22/6.7.10/6.8.1. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function devm_kfree of the component hi3559a. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a iteration vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-834. The product performs an iteration or loop without sufficiently limiting the number of times that the loop is executed. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: clk: hisilicon: hi3559a: Fix an erroneous devm_kfree() 'p_clk' is an array allocated just before the for loop for all clk that need to be registered. It is incremented at each loop iteration. If a clk_register() call fails, 'p_clk' may point to something different from what should be freed. The best we can do, is to avoid this wrong release of memory.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-27039 since 02/19/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

Upgrading to version 5.15.153, 6.1.83, 6.6.23, 6.7.11, 6.8.2 or 6.9-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 3f8445f1c746/e0b0d1c46a2c/95d1f1228c1b/2cc572e0085e/d575765b1b62/64c6a38136b7 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1008). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
