Linux Kernel up to 2.6.12 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The Linux kernel 2.6 before 2.6.12.1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (kernel panic) via a non group-leader thread executing a different program than was pending in itimer, which causes the signal to be delivered to the old group-leader task, which does not exist.

The bug was discovered 06/23/2005. The weakness was published 09/14/2005 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2005-1913 since 06/08/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 631 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20588 (Ubuntu 4.10 / 5.04 : linux-source-2.6.10, linux-source-2.6.8.1 vulnerabilities (USN-178-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.

Upgrading to version 2.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
