Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.67/5.19.8 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function debugfs_lookup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory leak vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-401. The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, which slowly consumes remaining memory. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: sched/debug: fix dentry leak in update_sched_domain_debugfs Kuyo reports that the pattern of using debugfs_remove(debugfs_lookup()) leaks a dentry and with a hotplug stress test, the machine eventually runs out of memory. Fix this up by using the newly created debugfs_lookup_and_remove() call instead which properly handles the dentry reference counting logic.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-48699. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.15.68, 5.19.9 or 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 26e9a1ded892/0c32a93963e0/c2e406596571 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1025). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
