A vulnerability was found in GNU texinfo 4.8. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function sort_offline. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. The sort_offline function for texindex in texinfo 4.8 and earlier allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files via a symlink attack on temporary files.

The bug was discovered 09/15/2005. The weakness was presented 09/21/2005 with Debian (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3011 since 09/21/2005. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
