Linux Kernel up to 6.9-rc5 openvswitch ovs_ct_exit use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9-rc5. This impacts the function ovs_ct_exit of the component openvswitch. Such manipulation leads to use after free. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2024-27395. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is advised.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.9-rc5. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ovs_ct_exit of the component openvswitch. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: openvswitch: Fix Use-After-Free in ovs_ct_exit Since kfree_rcu, which is called in the hlist_for_each_entry_rcu traversal of ovs_ct_limit_exit, is not part of the RCU read critical section, it is possible that the RCU grace period will pass during the traversal and the key will be free. To prevent this, it should be changed to hlist_for_each_entry_safe.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-27395 since 02/25/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 11/13/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210815 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2024:9315)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.18, 4.19.313, 5.4.275, 5.10.216, 5.15.158, 6.1.90, 6.6.30, 6.8.9 or 6.9-rc6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2db9a8c0a01f/589523cf0b38/35880c3fa6f8/9048616553c6/bca6fa2d9a9f/eaa5e164a211/edee0758747d/5ea7b72d4fac is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
