Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in micromatch braces up to 3.0.2. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block in the library lib/parse.js. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a excessive platform resource consumption within a loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-1050. The product has a loop body or loop condition that contains a control element that directly or
indirectly consumes platform resources, e.g. messaging, sessions, locks, or file
descriptors. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
The NPM package `braces`, versions prior to 3.0.3, fails to limit the number of characters it can handle, which could lead to Memory Exhaustion. In `lib/parse.js,` if a malicious user sends "imbalanced braces" as input, the parsing will enter a loop, which will cause the program to start allocating heap memory without freeing it at any moment of the loop. Eventually, the JavaScript heap limit is reached, and the program will crash.
The weakness was shared by Mário Teixeira. The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-4068 since 04/23/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
