Details
A vulnerability was found in Nozomi Networks Arc up to 1.5.x and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component ZIP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple functions use archives without properly validating the filenames therein, rendering the application vulnerable to path traversal via 'zip slip' attacks. An administrator able to provide tampered archives to be processed by the affected versions of Arc may be able to have arbitrary files extracted to arbitrary filesystem locations. Leveraging this issue, an attacker may be able to overwrite arbitrary files on the target filesystem and cause critical impacts on the system (e.g., arbitrary command execution on the victim’s machine).
The weakness was presented by Gabriele Quagliarella. The advisory is shared for download at security.nozominetworks.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-5938 since 11/02/2023. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. Additional levels of successful authentication are necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
