Linux Kernel up to 6.7.2 on AMD SIGFPE Signal injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.2 on AMD. It has been classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component SIGFPE Signal Handler. The manipulation leads to injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2024-25743. The attack needs to be performed locally. There is not any exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.7.2 on AMD. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component SIGFPE Signal Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel through 6.7.2, an untrusted hypervisor can inject virtual interrupts 0 and 14 at any point in time and can trigger the SIGFPE signal handler in userspace applications. This affects AMD SEV-SNP and AMD SEV-ES.

The advisory is shared at amd.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-25743 since 02/12/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/26/2026). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1055 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 227865 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2024-25743), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (227865) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1008). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
