Details
A vulnerability was found in parisneo lollms-webui up to 9.4. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function apply_settings of the file save_settings of the component JSON Handler. The manipulation of the argument config with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-29. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize '\..\filename' (leading backslash dot dot) sequences that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A path traversal vulnerability exists in the 'save_settings' endpoint of the parisneo/lollms-webui application, affecting versions up to the latest release before 9.5. The vulnerability arises due to insufficient sanitization of the 'config' parameter in the 'apply_settings' function, allowing an attacker to manipulate the application's configuration by sending specially crafted JSON payloads. This could lead to remote code execution (RCE) by bypassing existing patches designed to mitigate such vulnerabilities.
The advisory is shared at huntr.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-3435 since 04/07/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
Upgrading to version 9.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch bb99b59e710d00c4f2598faa5e183fa30fbd3bc2 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
