A vulnerability was found in Merak Mail Server 8.2.4r (Mail Server Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects an unknown part of the file logout.html. The manipulation of the argument helpid with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Multiple directory traversal vulnerabilities in MERAK Mail Server 8.2.4r with Icewarp Web Mail 5.5.1, and possibly earlier versions, allows remote attackers to (1) delete arbitrary files or directories via a relative path to the id parameter to logout.html or (2) include arbitrary PHP files or other files via the helpid parameter to help.html.
The weakness was disclosed 10/04/2005 by ShineShadow (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2005-3133. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:logout.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 19784 (IceWarp Web Mail Multiple Flaws (4)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
