Linux Kernel up to 6.8.1 Ethernet mtk_ppe_stop denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.152/6.1.82/6.6.22/6.7.10/6.8.1 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function mtk_ppe_stop of the component Ethernet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: ethernet: mtk_eth_soc: fix PPE hanging issue A patch to resolve an issue was found in MediaTek's GPL-licensed SDK: In the mtk_ppe_stop() function, the PPE scan mode is not disabled before disabling the PPE. This can potentially lead to a hang during the process of disabling the PPE. Without this patch, the PPE may experience a hang during the reboot test.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-27432 since 02/25/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 296181 (Azure Linux 3.0 Security Update: hyperv-daemons (CVE-2024-27432)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.153, 6.1.83, 6.6.23, 6.7.11 or 6.8.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 9fcadd125044/f78807362828/943c14ece95e/49202a8256fc/09a190743386/ea80e3ed09ab is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (296181) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1188). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
