Linux Kernel up to 5.15.149/6.1.79/6.6.18/6.7.6 netfilter flow_offload_add access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Such manipulation leads to access control. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2024-27403. No exploit is available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.149/6.1.79/6.6.18/6.7.6. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function flow_offload_add of the component netfilter. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nft_flow_offload: reset dst in route object after setting up flow dst is transferred to the flow object, route object does not own it anymore. Reset dst in route object, otherwise if flow_offload_add() fails, error path releases dst twice, leading to a refcount underflow.

The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-27403 since 02/25/2024. The exploitation is known to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207884 (openSUSE 15 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2024:3483-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.15.150, 6.1.80, 6.6.19 or 6.7.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4c167af9f6b5/012df10717da/558b00a30e05/670548c8db44/9e0f0430389b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207884) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1188). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
