Linux Kernel up to 6.8.2 ubifs_write_end allocation of resources

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.2 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function ubifs_write_end. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a allocation of resources vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-770. The product allocates a reusable resource or group of resources on behalf of an actor without imposing any restrictions on the size or number of resources that can be allocated, in violation of the intended security policy for that actor. Impacted is integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ubifs: Set page uptodate in the correct place Page cache reads are lockless, so setting the freshly allocated page uptodate before we've overwritten it with the data it's supposed to have in it will allow a simultaneous reader to see old data. Move the call to SetPageUptodate into ubifs_write_end(), which is after we copied the new data into the page.

The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2024-35821 since 05/17/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 239850 (TencentOS Server 4: kernel (TSSA-2024:0980)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.312, 5.4.274, 5.10.215, 5.15.154, 6.1.84, 6.6.24, 6.7.12 or 6.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4aa554832b9d/778c6ad40256/8f599ab6fabb/f19b1023a375/142d87c958d9/fc99f4e2d2f1/4b7c4fc60d6a/17772bbe9cfa/723012cab779 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (239850) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1188). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
