Linux Kernel up to 6.7.2 pipe wr_wait resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this vulnerability is the function wr_wait of the component pipe. This manipulation causes an unknown weakness. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-52672. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.209/5.15.148/6.1.75/6.6.14/6.7.2. Affected by this vulnerability is the function wr_wait of the component pipe. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: pipe: wakeup wr_wait after setting max_usage Commit c73be61cede5 ("pipe: Add general notification queue support") a regression was introduced that would lock up resized pipes under certain conditions. See the reproducer in [1]. The commit resizing the pipe ring size was moved to a different function, doing that moved the wakeup for pipe->wr_wait before actually raising pipe->max_usage. If a pipe was full before the resize occured it would result in the wakeup never actually triggering pipe_write. Set @max_usage and @nr_accounted before waking writers if this isn't a watch queue. [Christian Brauner <[email protected]>: rewrite to account for watch queues]

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-52672 since 03/07/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.210, 5.15.149, 6.1.76, 6.6.15 or 6.7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 162ae0e78bda/3efbd114b915/b87a1229d866/68e51bdb1194/6fb70694f8d1/e95aada4cb93 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209785) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1188). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
