Linux Kernel up to 6.6.13/6.7.1 ASoC sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_exit infinite loop

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.13/6.7.1. This issue affects the function sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_exit of the component ASoC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: Intel: sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_common: ctx->headset_codec_dev = NULL sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_exit() are used by different codecs, and some of them use the same dai name. For example, rt712 and rt713 both use "rt712-sdca-aif1" and sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_exit(). As a result, sof_sdw_rt_sdca_jack_exit() will be called twice by mc_dailink_exit_loop(). Set ctx->headset_codec_dev = NULL; after put_device(ctx->headset_codec_dev); to avoid ctx->headset_codec_dev being put twice.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2023-52697 since 03/07/2024. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210815 (RHEL 9 : kernel (RHSA-2024:9315)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.6.14 or 6.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch a410d58117d6/582231a8c4f7/e38e252dbcee is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210815) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1188). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
