Linux Kernel up to 6.8 on AMD Virtual Interrupt injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8 on AMD and classified as problematic. The affected element is an unknown function of the component Virtual Interrupt Handler. This manipulation causes injection. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-25742. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8 on AMD. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Virtual Interrupt Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-74. The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel before 6.9, an untrusted hypervisor can inject virtual interrupt 29 (#VC) at any point in time and can trigger its handler. This affects AMD SEV-SNP and AMD SEV-ES.

It is possible to read the advisory at amd.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-25742 since 02/12/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1055 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209346 (Oracle Linux 7 : edk2 (ELSA-2024-12794)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 6.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (209346) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1008). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
