Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.6.25/6.8.4. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function devm_kzalloc of the component mchp-pci1xxx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: spi: mchp-pci1xxx: Fix a possible null pointer dereference in pci1xxx_spi_probe In function pci1xxxx_spi_probe, there is a potential null pointer that may be caused by a failed memory allocation by the function devm_kzalloc. Hence, a null pointer check needs to be added to prevent null pointer dereferencing later in the code. To fix this issue, spi_bus->spi_int[iter] should be checked. The memory allocated by devm_kzalloc will be automatically released, so just directly return -ENOMEM without worrying about memory leaks.
The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2024-35883 since 05/17/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Upgrading to version 6.6.26 or 6.8.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4b31a226097c/95e5d9eb2670/1f886a7bfb3f is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
