Linux Kernel up to 6.8.4 nf_tables __nft_flowtable_type_get information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.4. It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is the function __nft_flowtable_type_get of the component nf_tables. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: nf_tables: Fix potential data-race in __nft_flowtable_type_get() nft_unregister_flowtable_type() within nf_flow_inet_module_exit() can concurrent with __nft_flowtable_type_get() within nf_tables_newflowtable(). And thhere is not any protection when iterate over nf_tables_flowtables list in __nft_flowtable_type_get(). Therefore, there is pertential data-race of nf_tables_flowtables list entry. Use list_for_each_entry_rcu() to iterate over nf_tables_flowtables list in __nft_flowtable_type_get(), and use rcu_read_lock() in the caller nft_flowtable_type_get() to protect the entire type query process.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2024-35898 since 05/17/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207689 (RHEL 8 : kernel (RHSA-2024:6993)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.19.312, 5.4.274, 5.10.215, 5.15.154, 6.1.85, 6.6.26 or 6.8.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 69d1fe14a680/a347bc8e6251/940d41caa71f/2485bcfe05ee/9b5b7708ec2b/8b891153b2e4/e684b1674fd1/24225011d81b is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (207689) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2025-1293). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
