Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 6.8.8 and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function i2c_hid_xfer of the component HID. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a infinite loop vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-835. The product contains an iteration or loop with an exit condition that cannot be reached, i.e., an infinite loop. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: HID: i2c-hid: remove I2C_HID_READ_PENDING flag to prevent lock-up The flag I2C_HID_READ_PENDING is used to serialize I2C operations. However, this is not necessary, because I2C core already has its own locking for that. More importantly, this flag can cause a lock-up: if the flag is set in i2c_hid_xfer() and an interrupt happens, the interrupt handler (i2c_hid_irq) will check this flag and return immediately without doing anything, then the interrupt handler will be invoked again in an infinite loop. Since interrupt handler is an RT task, it takes over the CPU and the flag-clearing task never gets scheduled, thus we have a lock-up. Delete this unnecessary flag.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2024-35997 since 05/17/2024. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 209785 (EulerOS Virtualization 2.12.0 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2024-2781)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.19.313, 5.4.275, 5.10.216, 5.15.158, 6.1.90, 6.6.30 or 6.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 21bfca822cfc/c448a9fd50f7/5095b93021b8/b65fb50e04a9/0561b65fbd53/29e94f295bad/418c5575d564/9c0f59e47a90 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (209785). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
