Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version). This affects the function ndrallocate in the library msdtcprx.dll of the component Distributed Transaction Coordinator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The MIDL_user_allocate function in the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) proxy (MSDTCPRX.DLL) allocates a 4K page of memory regardless of the required size, which allows attackers to overwrite arbitrary memory locations using an incorrect size value that is provided to the NdrAllocate function, which writes management data to memory outside of the allocated buffer.
The bug was discovered 10/11/2005. The weakness was published 10/11/2005 by eEye Digital Security with eEye Digital Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-2119 since 07/02/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After 2 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 20008 (MS05-051: Vulnerabilities in MSDTC Could Allow Remote Code Execution (902400) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90274 (Microsoft MSDTC and COM+ Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS05-051)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 4245. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3826.
