A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.138/5.10.56/5.13.5. This issue affects the function for_each_acpi_dev_match of the component ACPI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ACPI: fix NULL pointer dereference Commit 71f642833284 ("ACPI: utils: Fix reference counting in for_each_acpi_dev_match()") started doing "acpi_dev_put()" on a pointer that was possibly NULL. That fails miserably, because that helper inline function is not set up to handle that case. Just make acpi_dev_put() silently accept a NULL pointer, rather than calling down to put_device() with an invalid offset off that NULL pointer.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-47289 since 05/21/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
