Linux Kernel up to 5.12.12 bridge tunnel_dst null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.14.237/4.19.195/5.4.127/5.10.45/5.12.12. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function tunnel_dst of the component bridge. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: bridge: fix vlan tunnel dst null pointer dereference This patch fixes a tunnel_dst null pointer dereference due to lockless access in the tunnel egress path. When deleting a vlan tunnel the tunnel_dst pointer is set to NULL without waiting a grace period (i.e. while it's still usable) and packets egressing are dereferencing it without checking. Use READ/WRITE_ONCE to annotate the lockless use of tunnel_id, use RCU for accessing tunnel_dst and make sure it is read only once and checked in the egress path. The dst is already properly RCU protected so we don't need to do anything fancy than to make sure tunnel_id and tunnel_dst are read only once and checked in the egress path.

It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-47223 since 04/10/2024. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 216454 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:0565-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.14.238, 4.19.196, 5.4.128, 5.10.46 or 5.12.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ad7feefe7164/24a6e55f17aa/a2241e62f6b4/fe0448a3fad3/abb02e05cb1c/58e2071742e3 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (216454) and CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1197). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
