A vulnerability was found in pam_ldap up to 183 (Directory Service Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function passwordPolicyResponse of the component Authentication. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. pam_ldap in nss_ldap on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Fedora Core 3 and earlier, and possibly other distributions does not return an error condition when an LDAP directory server responds with a PasswordPolicyResponse control response, which causes the pam_authenticate function to return a success code even if authentication has failed, as originally reported for xscreensaver.
The bug was discovered 10/05/2006. The weakness was shared 11/03/2006 by Steve Rigler as Bug 291 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.padl.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2006-5170 since 10/04/2006. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 22935 (Debian DSA-1203-1 : libpam-ldap - programming error), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115463 (Red Hat nss_ldap Security Update (RHSA-2006:0719)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugzilla.padl.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
