Summary
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.149/5.10.69/5.14.8. Impacted is the function irq_set_affinity_hit of the component enetc. Executing a manipulation of the argument cpu_mask can lead to stack-based overflow.
This vulnerability appears as CVE-2021-47368. There is no available exploit.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.4.149/5.10.69/5.14.8 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function irq_set_affinity_hit of the component enetc. The manipulation of the argument cpu_mask with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: enetc: Fix illegal access when reading affinity_hint irq_set_affinity_hit() stores a reference to the cpumask_t parameter in the irq descriptor, and that reference can be accessed later from irq_affinity_hint_proc_show(). Since the cpu_mask parameter passed to irq_set_affinity_hit() has only temporary storage (it's on the stack memory), later accesses to it are illegal. Thus reads from the corresponding procfs affinity_hint file can result in paging request oops. The issue is fixed by the get_cpu_mask() helper, which provides a permanent storage for the cpumask_t parameter.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-47368 since 05/21/2024. The exploitation appears to be easy. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/21/2025).
Upgrading to version 5.4.150, 5.10.70 or 5.14.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4c4c3052911b/6c3f1b741c6c/6f329d9da2a5/7237a494decf is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at CERT Bund (WID-SEC-2024-1197). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
