Webroot Desktop Firewall up to 1.3.0 pwiwrapper.dll stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as problematic has been detected in Webroot Desktop Firewall up to 1.3.0. Affected is an unknown function in the library pwiwrapper.dll. Performing a manipulation results in stack-based overflow. This vulnerability was named CVE-2005-3197. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to use restrictive firewalling.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Webroot Desktop Firewall up to 1.3.0 (Firewall Software). This affects some unknown functionality in the library pwiwrapper.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in PWIWrapper.dll for Webroot Desktop Firewall before 1.3.0build52 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM by sending a crafted DeviceIoControl command, then removing an allowed program from the firewall list.

The bug was discovered 06/20/2005. The weakness was presented 10/06/2005 by Tan Chew Keong with Secunia Research (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2005-3197 since 10/14/2005. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 108 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Upgrading to version 1.3.0build52 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling . The best possible mitigation is suggested to be applying a restrictive firewalling.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (22529), SecurityFocus (BID 15016†), OSVDB (19868†), Secunia (SA15745†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1015012†).
