Linux Kernel up to 6.6.1 hsr prp_create_tagged_frame use after free

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.10.200/5.15.138/6.1.62/6.5.11/6.6.1. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function prp_create_tagged_frame of the component hsr. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: hsr: Prevent use after free in prp_create_tagged_frame() The prp_fill_rct() function can fail. In that situation, it frees the skb and returns NULL. Meanwhile on the success path, it returns the original skb. So it's straight forward to fix bug by using the returned value.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2023-52846 since 05/21/2024. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/31/2024).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 207729 (SUSE SLES15 Security Update : kernel (Live Patch 18 for SLE 15 SP4) (SUSE-SU-2024:3425-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 5.10.201, 5.15.139, 6.1.63, 6.5.12 or 6.6.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch ddf4e04e946a/a1a485e45d24/6086258bd5ea/1787b9f0729d/d103fb672690/876f8ab52363 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
