Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 5.15.139/6.1.63/6.5.12/6.6.2 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function DAT_data of the component mipi-i3c-hci. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a initialization vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-665. The product does not initialize or incorrectly initializes a resource, which might leave the resource in an unexpected state when it is accessed or used. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i3c: master: mipi-i3c-hci: Fix a kernel panic for accessing DAT_data. The `i3c_master_bus_init` function may attach the I2C devices before the I3C bus initialization. In this flow, the DAT `alloc_entry`` will be used before the DAT `init`. Additionally, if the `i3c_master_bus_init` fails, the DAT `cleanup` will execute before the device is detached, which will execue DAT `free_entry` function. The above scenario can cause the driver to use DAT_data when it is NULL.
The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2023-52763 since 05/21/2024. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 5.15.140, 6.1.64, 6.5.13 or 6.6.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 39c71357e68e/e64d23dc6581/3cb79a365e7c/eed74230435c/b53e9758a31c is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
