Linux Kernel up to 5.12.12 batman-adv race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.12. This impacts an unknown function of the component batman-adv. Executing a manipulation can lead to race condition. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2021-47252. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.12.12. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component batman-adv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. The impact remains unknown. CVE summarizes:

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: batman-adv: Avoid WARN_ON timing related checks The soft/batadv interface for a queued OGM can be changed during the time the OGM was queued for transmission and when the OGM is actually transmitted by the worker. But WARN_ON must be used to denote kernel bugs and not to print simple warnings. A warning can simply be printed using pr_warn.

The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2021-47252 since 04/10/2024. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

Upgrading to version 4.4.293, 4.9.274, 4.14.238, 4.19.196, 5.4.128, 5.10.46 or 5.12.13 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 45011f2973f6/6031daaaf6d5/77a99aad5bc3/e8e9d2968a9d/e7fbd8184fa9/282baa8104af/2eb4e0b36318/9f460ae31c44 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
